An inquiry into...

Today we are starting a new inquiry - it has something to do with animals and music but will include most curriculum areas. Each day Room 3 will discover a little bit more about the topic and THEN they will decide what direction their learning will go. For example they may decide to research famous musicians and where they came from. It could be finding our about different animals and their habitats. They may choose to investigate how musical instruments work, and the history of them. The possibilities are endless. So stay tuned...

Famous Five's Friday Feast

This video is made up of lots, but not all, of the photos the R3 kids and Ms Betts took on the iPad mini. Hope you enjoy it - you may want to turn the sound down after a minute or so! I am having trouble converting the video from iMovie into a format that Blogger likes, so don't try to enlarge the video - the quality is awful.

We can write sentences!

In the last week Room 3 have been looking at what makes a sentence. Do you know that a sentence MUST have a capital letter at the start and MUST have a full stop at the end of it? Yes, it does!
There are also different sentence types - simple, compound and complex sentences.
Simple sentence - 'The boy went to the shop'.
Compound sentence - 'The  boy went to the shop because he had to buy some shoes.'
Complex sentence - 'When the boy went to the shop, after he has saved enough money, he brought a             trendy pair of shoes.

We used this photo, and talked about little children running away from home, to base our paragraph of 4-6 sentences on. Each paragraph needed to have a simple, compound and complex sentence in it.
We hope you enjoy our writing. Comments about your favourite sentences that we have written are WELCOME!

Little Tom was so  upset he ran through the bull's paddock by the river and blackberries. He went to his Nana who never told him off for anything. Whenever he goes over there he always gets treats. When he got over to Nana's they then went to milk the cows. Then his mum came over, smacked him and dragged him home!

Little Tom was so upset he ran away because he pushed his sister Jade over. Ms Betts searched for him. When she found  him chatting away with Nana Marj, she said, "I told you not ran away"! Tom said, "I stayed well away from the creek".  Ms Betts took him home and he never ran away again.

Little Tom was so upset he ran away. He went over the ditch, over the elcetcric fence and over the hill to Nana's house. But then his mum came over to smack his bum and then they went home.  Tom cried all night but he never ran away again.

My little cousin was so upset he found his dad's suitcase, packed his lollies and went to his grandmum's house. When Aunty found out she was mad! When she saw him beside Grandmum, my little cousin said, "I went to grandmums. I went to grandmums because I needed more lollies". My aunty said no candy for a month. Even though Aunty said no candy she doesn't know about the candy floss inside the pillowcase!

My little brother was so upset he ran away down the road. I could not find him, not in the cowshed, not in the stable. He was nowhere to be found. Then I looked in the fort and found him. I was so relieved that I had found him but I did give him a whack on the bum. That day I was crazy that had happened but happy to know he was safe.

Learning Place Value

Today we made sure everyone can recognise a digit's value in the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands place. For example in the number 3752 the digit 7 has the value of NOT 7 but 700. A trickier example is if a number has zero in it, such as 2803. We know the digit 3 = 3 ones but we have to remember that this 0 means there are no tens. Some of us still need to work on not getting mixed up with a zero in the number!

Every group worked with Ms Betts throughout the morning to make sure they understood the value of each digit to 9999. There were follow up worksheets and, best of all, other Place Value games to play!
Bingo is a great way to learn PV - everyone liked working with such big numbers.

I think Charlotte won this game! This activity was to colour the fish...but it wasn't that easy. Each number had a code - different colours for different PV. Jahniq got the hang of it pretty quickly though.

Another activity we played was rolling two dice, adding up the numbers and taking that many ONES. When there were enough ones to make a TEN you swap it for a ten. The aim was to be the first to get to 50. Later on we will make it one hundred, or more, and use 3 or 4 dice at once.
Lots of addition and counting!

Spencer Beach class trip postponed

Hi there everyone,

Hopefully you have alreay been told by your child that our class trip tomorrow, Thursday 6th March, has been called off. I got a call from a Christchurch City Council Park Ranger to let me know the beach and park is closed while they clean up after the storm, as it is too dangerous for class trips.
I am in the process of rebooking, and will let you know the new date as soon as I can.

Place Value

Hello everyone,
What a wild and wet week it is turning out to be. A great week to get some extra homework done though! I have downloaded a few YouTube video clips  on PLACE VALUE. The clips help explain what we are doing in class at the moment, give the students someone else to listen to besides me, and also gives some great examples and activities to try out. There are many more on YouTube if you want to investigate - just watch out for pop-ups and unwanted links and adds.

Enjoy learning more about Place Value - and fingers crossed for a better day on Thursday for our class trip!

The below clip is pretty cool, it goes up to 1000 and gives plenty of examples.

The next 2 videos are a little but harder, but it is what we will soon be learning in Room 3.
